Songs To Change the World
Compiled by Sean Prophet
Every once in a while, I run across a song that states universal truths in a way that makes me stop and just say "Wow, if only everyone could hear, understand, and live these words, the world would be a better place." These songs have influenced my life in tremendous ways. Without some of them, I wouldn't be sitting here writing this--or probably writing anything at all. I will slowly add to this list over time. If you think something should be on this list, write and let me know. Like humor, heartfelt poetry set to music has a way of getting past typical defenses and imparting undertanding that can be both powerful and irrefutable.
I list these songs strictly for their poetry and philosophy. In any given room, if you can please 40% of people with a selection of music, you're doing well. But you don't have to like the music to hear the cry of these songwriters. Some songs, like "Imagine" have inspired generations and will continue to do so. Others are less well known. In honor of the greatness of John Lennon, I will start this collection with his profound cry for peace, understanding and spiritual self-reliance. All lyrics are copyrighted by their respective authors.
