What President George W. Bush said tonight (Monday, March 17, 2003) about kicking Saddam Hussein out of power, and
setting the Iraqi people free, proclaiming a new era of liberty for all future generations of Iraqi
people, is something that has not come out of the mouth of a U.S. President in a very long time.
It is the very wind of freedom itself.
President Harry Truman should have said the same
thing to the Soviet Union in 1945, and he should have said the same thing to Communist China
in 1949, especially in 1951 when they invaded Tibet, and to North Korea in 1953. He could
have said it, because we were at the top of our game then, an uncontested force of liberty and
freedom on the planet. But given the fact that Truman remained silent, it was then up to
President Eisenhower to speak up. At the very least, Eisenhower should have said the same
thing to the Soviet Union in 1956 when they invaded Hungary. But given the fact that
Eisenhower remained silent, it was then up to President John F. Kennedy to speak up. Kennedy
should have said the same thing to Communist North Vietnam in 1961, and Communist Cuba in
1962. But given the fact that Kennedy remained silent, it was then up to President Lyndon B.
Johnson to speak up. At the very least, Johnson should have said the same thing to Communist
North Vietnam in 1965. By their silence, what these Presidents said instead, was that America
was not the home of the brave, but the home of cowards who are not willing to stand up for
freedom, or pay the price for it; America, a people whose spine, resolve, fortitude, and
determination, could easily be turned into a little puddle of ingratitude and self-concern who
are eager to throw their car into reverse at the appearance of any obstacle. And because of it,
hundreds of millions came under the boot, and remained under the boot of one form of tyranny
or another.
But now, this decades long veil of shame has been
lifted. A long tradition of cowardice and spinelessness has been broken. President George W.
Bush has finally taken the right stand, and he has proclaimed that America is indeed not simply
the land of the free, but we are again the home of the brave. Here is a President who has
actually rung the Liberty Bell on behalf of another nation, and committed the people of this
nation to their liberation. What a refreshing change it is to see some actual spine in a U.S.
President.
This is a watershed event in the history of the world.
When Iraq is liberated, every tyrant on the planet, from that moment on, will live every day
shaking in their boots. And that's the way it ought to be. Yes, you can see why they love
"peace" so much. America has again found the boots that God made for her in the beginning.
They are marching boots. They are boots that we wear as we march forth to topple every
dictator who oppresses the Children of God across the face of this earth. And then we stand
with the newly liberated to help them develop stable institutions of liberty and democracy,
leading the planet into the golden age of freedom that every heart of good will yearns for.
This is the role God our Father has designed for us if
we want it. And by playing this role we will be building a national character with a profound
sense of self-worth, because that worth is associated with coming to the rescue of the oppressed
around the world. Consider the character of a fire fighter, a police officer, and the people who
man the hospitals, emergency rooms, and ambulances. They live to help others. Consider how
much these people are respected and adored. God has given this nation a unique opportunity to
develop an entire national character that is related to rescuing nations from their tormentors.
We will begin with Iraq. And when its over, America will feel good about herself, just as we
feel good about liberating Afghanistan from the Taliban. But we should not stop until every
nation on earth has a form of government that derives its just powers from the consent of the
governed. Let us not sink back into the inertia and sleepiness of self-indulgence. Let us light
the lamp of freedom and liberty nation by nation.
